Palak Paneer

This is a classic Indian mealtime dish! The tasty combination of wilted spinach, soft paneer (indian cottage cheese) and heartwarming spices always seems to satisfy! Paneer is now readily available in most supermarkets, but you could make this dish with tofu instead…

  • 2 packets of paneer (approx.500g)- cubed
  • 2 Bay leaves
  • Small amount of grated ginger
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 2 red onions (diced)
  • 2 tbsp passata
  • 350g of pureed spinach (palak)
  • 30ml of water
  • 2tsp paprika (or red chilli powder if you like it spicy)
  • 1tsp haldi (turmeric)
  • 1tsp dhaniya powder(ground coriander seed)
  • a pinch garam masala
  • 1tsp jeera(cumin seed)


  1. Heat some vegetable oil in a karahi or saucepan, then add the bay leaves and jeera until they begin to crackle. Enjoy the aromas
  2. Then add the ginger, garlic and onion and sautee for 2-3 mins
  3. Then add the paneer, paprika, haldi, dhaniya powder and garam masala; sautee for another 3-4 mins
  4. Next add the passata and spinach, cook over a medium heat for 10-15 mins; stirring occasionally
  5. Serve hot and enjoy with fresh roti or naan…
